The Ideal Pen
Waterman's in England
1890-1990
This history of that great US pen pioneer, Waterman's, during a century in England, 1890-1990, is spread over more than 300 pages, in nine chapters and an appendix and includes hundreds of images taken from colour catalogues, brochures and in-house Pen Prophet magazines. It also features dozens of trade adverts, patent drawings and price lists, as well as information on factories, offices and important personnel.
The development of operations in London starts with the appointment of L&C Hardtmuth (in 1900) and continues with the take-over by Lawrence Sloan during the Great War, the establishment of a Waterman's-owned limited company with local manufacturing facilities (late 1940s), the decline into a moribund business (1960s) and the eventual resurrection (1970s/1980s) under French ownership and control.
